OVERVIEW: The Artist was designed to let creative artists unleash
their ability in a moving enviroment. No more still pictures
to just look at, now your creations get up and walk around.
They do anything you want them to. Currently The Artist is
a powerful and versatile tool. Further programming would
advance it even more and allow you to create your own full
screen movies (see included file readme!.doc). It would
use your computers full power. In this version you can create
animations in VGA 320x200 256 color graphics with a full
screen background. You can create a palette to suit your
picture and rotate it for stunning effects. Added to this
you can have 256 color animations. The number of frames is
dependent on the amount of free memory. Purple Software
is dedicated to bringing you top of the line software at
low prices. We are an enviromental company (this is why we
do not offer printed docs to registered users, we feel it is
a waste of trees since you can just as easily read it off of
disk). Once I get my company started I will hopefully be
able to donate money to enviromental causes.
DEMO: A few demonstration animations are included in this packet.
These are to help you get familiar with The Artist and see
what you are playing with. All demonstrations are labeled
-demo?.til - Background
-demo?.anm - Animation
The ? represents the number of the demo. All of them use
the default palette. To play them you must be familiar
with the menu system and Play system. You can read those
quickly and see what the Artist does.
MOUSE USE: In The Artist a Microsoft compatible mouse is required.
-The Left button is the action button. It draws, puts,
gets, accepts, and chooses.
-The Right button is the resize button and menu button.
-The middle button or both Left and Right buttons pressed
simultaneously always brings up the main menu. If you do
not have a three button mouse it is best to always press
the right button and then the left button to exit. That
way you don't accidentaly put anything by pressing the left
button first
-When the main menu is up pressing the Left button chooses
the action and color. When you go below the menu it
disappears. You can stay in the same function as long
as you do not choose another one.
-I don't have much of an idea of the differences bewteen
mouse drivers. If your mouse can move past the edge
of the screen do not let it, it really screws things
up.
ARTIST COMMANDS: Note the suffix 2 means second menu
*BYE* -This command exits The Artist. None of your work
is saved.
-It prints "Are you sure (y\n)"
-Reply accordingly with the keyboard in lower-
case
-Move the mouse below the main menu
*INK* -This command gives you a pencil in the chosen color
-Left mouse button puts color on screen
-Right mouse button while moving the mouse in
or out resizes the pencil
*LINE* -This command allows you to draw straight lines
-Left continued press starts line

-Right mouse button while moving the mouse in
or out resizes the line.
*FILL* -This command allows you to fill areas with one color
It runs in all four directions until it encounters a
color other than the one it was first pressed on
-Left mouse button initiates fill
*CAN* -This command brings up a menu of spraypaint types
-Move mouse cursor over desired spray
-Click left mouse button
-Left mouse button sprays
*CUT* -This command allows you to cut a piece of your
picture and move it around. It does not cut
black (color 0).
-Left continued press cuts picture
-Release of Left puts cut picture
-Right mouse button while moving the mouse
in or out resizes the cut piece
*CUT2* -This is functionally the same as CUT except the
black background is copied.

-Left mouse button chooses color and places
color. Presses to the left or right of the

its original value
*OOPS* -The screen is saved every time you call up the menu
If this command is chosen it replaces the current
picture with what the picture was the last time
you called up the menu. If you are not sure if
something will look good, call up the menu before
you try it. That way if it turns bad you can
erase it.
*PAT* -This function allows you to cut anything from the
screen and draw with it.
-A rectangle cursor will appear
-Right mouse button pressed while moving the
mouse sizes the rectangle
-Click the left button to choose pattern
-Press the left button to place the pattern
as many times as you want
-Try loading bue.til and bue2.til for examples
*VIEW* -This command lets you see the chosen rotations
(described under palette commands) rotate.
-Press 'd' to change the delay
-Press any other key to exit
*OUT* -This command traces the edge of a chosen
color. For instance if you are shading down or
up choose this option. Then you can have a line
that outlines another color. When you use this
it scans along and puts the current color next
to any pixel of the color to outline. You cannot
outline the same color as the current color. If
you want to outline only one side of something you
need to zoom up on the ends of the color to outline.
Using the color that you will outline with put a
pixel up against the color on each end. This way
when it goes along to outline it will run into the
current color and be forced to stop.
-Click left mouse button once to select the
starting point of the outline
-Click left mouse button once on the color
to be traced along
*LOAD* -This command loads a picture file or animation file

-Holding down right button while moving mouse
expands or decreases the save region in
increments of X and Y
-If your mouse can go beyond the edge of the
do NOT LET IT!
-Left mouse button saves
-Middle or Right and Left mouse buttons exit
PALETTE COMMANDS: Brought up by *PAL*, If you have a fast video card, barely
click the left mouse button for these commands.

command, pick two colors. All the colors inbetween
will change and flow into each other.
*COPY* -Exchanges the place of two colors.
-Click on the first color
-Click on the color to be exchanged with
*OOPS* -Erases your previous command
ANIMATION COMMANDS:
*ANIM/DRAW*-This command either enters you into animation mode
or into drawing mode. When entering animation mode
a cursor rectangle will appear. This is the size
of your animation. Just moving the mouse will
resize it. Any button press will accept. If you
leave animation mode your animation is not saved.
*UP n DOWN*-This command moves you up and down frames. When
moving up a frame the animation from the previous
frame is copied into the new frame. The new frame
can be of any size and follows as when you are
just entering animation mode.
*DEL n INS*-This command either deletes or inserts a frame. If
you choose delete the frame you are currently
working on will be deleted. If you choose insert
a frame will be inserted in front the current frame.
If you already have a frame in front of the current
frame the picture will be copied in.
*PLAY* -This command brings you into play mode which is
commanded by both the mouse and keys. In the play
mode you can have up to 30 differen't animations.
These are saved when you save the animation. You
must however save the animation after you have put
in the play pieces. When I say animation I mean
the sequence in which your pictures are put.
You can have
-30 differen't animations with 100 sequences each
-All menus will disappear and your background
will reappear. Upon moving the mouse you will
see Frame 0 move around as if a mouse cursor.
-Left mouse click places an animation
-Right mouse click removes last place
-Left Arrow key or K moves you down a frame
-Right Arrow key or M moves you up a frame
-Up Arrow key or P moves you up an animation
-Down Arrow key or H moves you down an animation
-Lower case m displays amount of memory your
current animation and sequence
-To erase the last animation, press 'E'
-Lower case d sets the delay time, the higher
the number the slower the animation
-Middle mouse button or both at the same time
exits or key press (if you do not have a three
button mouse hitting a key is recommended.)
-Return key plays animation
-Animation repeats until a key is hit
*NEW* -Erases all current frames and starts a completely
new animation
*Right and Down Arrows*
-This resizes the current animation in case you
didn't have enough room or you have to much.
-Move the rectangle cursor by moving the mouse
-Accept with any key
This command used along with CUT2 is useful to give
you more space. First resize you frame then cut
the picture and move it down for more room.
It is also useful when the animation frame is done.
You cut and move the picture up into the top left
corner, right up against the frame boundary. Then
resize the frame up against the bottom and right
pixels of your animation. This conserves memory
and increases speed.
*PEACE* -Actually this means two for menu 2
*ONE* -Means for menu 1
CLOSING: I hope I have adequatley explained how to use this program.
It has taken quite a bit of effort but I think the product
shows that. I hope that you continue to enjoy it and send
in the registration fee. I have hopes of becoming a full
time shareware author. As it is now (3/4/93) I am in my
Senior year of high school and I was able to write this.
Just think about this coming summer. If there is enough
response the new Version (described in README!.doc will
definitely come out).
